Black and Asian officers who previously worked for Essex Police are being sought by the force ahead of celebrations for Black History Month later this year.

The Essex Police Museum is planning to hold a special display in its newly-revamped surroundings at police headquarters during October, with stories, pictures and items from former employees welcomed.

Museum Curator Becky Latchford is keen to hear from as many retired officers and police staff, including those who left the force and are now working for other organisations.

“We want to be able to show off the diversity that currently exists within Essex Police and the huge steps forward we have taken over the years to eradicate any such prejudices that we had within the force,” said Miss Latchford. “We’re looking to embrace the richness that serving and former staff have given to the force and its communities and show this off in some sort of special display in the museum which will continue to have its place there even after October.”

Essex Police is the only force in the eastern region to have its own museum, with the Metropolitan Police’s own Crime Museum open only to serving officers.

Essex Black Police Association Chairman, Chief Superintendent Win Bernard, said: “We are totally behind it and are asking members to speak to their friends and relatives who also worked for the force.”

Anyone who wishes to help Essex Police celebrate black history month is urged to contact Miss Latchford on 01245 457150.
