Over 180 people have now been arrested and four firearms have been seized, including an AK47 Assault Rifle and a Lancaster Machine Gun during Op Strikeback.
House searches also led to the recovery of up to £50,000 of suspected Ecstasy, a quantity of suspected cocaine and suspected Cannabis. Approximately £20,000 in cash was also seized followed by a stolen vehicle worth £50,000.
Additional officers from across West Yorkshire Police were drafted into the Pudsey Weetwood area to help crackdown on burglary as part of the Force’s campaign Strikeback which aims to tackle the traditional seasonal increases in crime.
Since its launch at the beginning of October Strikeback has focussed on burglary from an enforcement and disruption angle which has seen great success but to maintain this Police believe further prevention is required from the public.
Divisional Commander for the area Chief Superintendent Howard Crowther said, “This has been excellent for local police and residents as we have made significant inroads into local criminal fraternities and burglaries have reduced by 36% compared to the same two week period last year.
“Residents now have to take on the responsibility of protecting their homes, I’m keen to remind people that an open door is an open invite. If you make your home look welcoming to a burglar by leaving it in darkness with insecure windows or doors, they will take the invitation and come in.
“The key measures to protecting your home are simple; leave a light on whilst you are out and vary which light you leave on to avoid predictability. Ensure all doors and windows are kept locked and if you have extra security measures such as burglar alarms or timer switches ensure that you use them.”
"Tell me who is committing the burglaries in your area. and we will take action. If you know or suspect who is up to no good let us know your suspicions. Use the Crimestopper number 0800 555 111 or speak to your local community support officers. You might have half the picture we might already have the other half. "
The number of burglaries has now reduced by 30% compared to the same time last year and overall crime is down 24%.
