Is shouting out rude comments at a football match or other sports game illegal? Or is it just a case of getting chucked out the grounds instead of the police having any power to arrest you? I'm thinking you can be given a fine or something but what do I know? I'm not 'job'

Yes its a public order offence.

The specific offence of 'chanting' falls under Section 3 of the Football Act 1991. The maximum penalty for this offence is a fine of £1000. This offence also carries powers of arrest. You could also arrest the individuals responsible to prevent a further breach of the peace.

I used to get flack cos we had to enforce the law of Drinking insite of a football pitch while a game is on
