How can they impose curfews, if that was in this country people would be winging about their human rights.

New emergency powers aimed at stopping rioting in French towns and cities have been unveiled by the government.

It will see emergency powers being used in more than 30 towns and cities.

So far only Amiens has imposed an overnight curfew under the new measures.

Emergency curfews imposed overnight helped curb the violence.

Despite disturbances in several areas, the nightly violence that has gripped the country for two weeks abated slightly.

More than 600 cars were set ablaze overnight and 204 people were arrested but police insist there were fewer incidents and no reports of shots fired.

Around 116 towns were affected - about half as many as the night earlier.

There were also smaller riots in Belgium and Germany.

One officer said: "There has been a marked decrease (in violence), particularly in the provinces, and the downward trend is continuing in Ile-de-France (the greater Paris region)."

Superstores were burned and looted, a newspaper office set on fire and France's second-largest subway system paralysed by a firebomb in attacks across the country.

The government declared a state of emergency in the worst-hit parts of the country under a decree that allows regional authorities to declare curfews in an effort of combat the violence.

Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, who was visiting police in southwestern Toulouse, a flashpoint of unrest in recent days, said there had been a "fairly significant fall" in the violence.

French courts are now having to deal with a huge backlog of people arrested in the past fortnight. So far, 106 of the 1,500 detained have been given jail sentences.

The rioting was set off by the deaths of two teenagers electrocuted in a sub-station as they hid from police.

It swiftly became a way for the children of immigrants to demonstrate their anger at the hardships faced by the Arab community.
