Garda group to debate arming officers
Tuesday, 29 April 2008 07:20

The Garda Representative Association will debate a call for all uniformed members to carry firearms at their annual conference in Co Carlow today.

Last night the association's Deputy General Secretary, John Healy, said he was in favour of gardaĆ from motorcycle policing units carrying guns as well as other selected officers who are in direct contact with criminal gang elements on a daily basis.

The shooting of uniformed garda Paul Sherlock on his motorbike in Dublin's north inner city last September shocked the GRA's membership of some 11,000 gardaĆ.

AdvertisementMany members of the force believe their colleagues on motorcycle traffic work are more vulnerable than any other unit because of their ability to get to the scene of an incident and confront criminals without delay.

The GRA will debate the situation and their ongoing campaign for pay increases in the presence of the Garda Commissioner and the Minister for Justice at their annual conference later today

Gets my vote, long overdue. Always thought you should have armed uniformed officers...

Yea but not all of them, so I wouldnt trust with a ball point pen.

But i do agree that its farceical that already over stretched detectives have to double task and act as arv's as such for uniformed officers.

ERU only just got them here, used twice already.

First time the scrote got it in the forehead, serves him right for carrying a loaded glock with two spare mags.

Hope it shocked some sense into him
