The national co-ordinator of the British Association of Women in Policing has warned that female officers are at risk of carrying out accidental shootings due to their weapons being too big for their hands.

Liz Owsley told a Home Office conference on human rights that guns present a significant problem for the 200 female firearms officers who operate across the UK's police forces.

The Telegraph quotes her as saying: "There is a problem with guns because women have smaller hands. When you look at the guns being used, the grips are not comfortable for women to hold.

"They could end up shooting themselves or one of their colleagues because they are not handling it properly."

Work is being carried out by the Cleveland and Durham forces to introduce a weapon which has a smaller handle - with the Glock handgun, already used in the Metropolitan force and some others, among those considered suitable for use.

There is not a handgun made that I couldn't teach a female to shoot and shoot well.

A much more civil answer, but don't they give female LEO's in the US the choice of smaller weapons?

Not that I am aware of. Im not saying that some depts dont, but I have never heard of it happening.

What do other county's do?????

Neither Essex or the Met have smaller handguns for females.
