I never heard of even one hook on a patrol car floor. Cant imagine the promotion prospects of the candidate that suggested that at his interview. Ever hear of the Health, Safety and Welfare at Work Act 1989 or 2005 ?
Imagine the damage that a tight pair of official issue SMITH & WESSON cuffs would do to a scrotes wrist / elbow / shoulder ?
Take your pick Sarge and leave off watching the Mad Max DVD.
Quote "Yea one thing in the van imagine that in the back of the car, if you didn't have someone with them in the back theycould easily wrap the cuffs around the drivers neck "
A prisoner in a Garda patrol car ......... sitting behind the driver ..........with his hands handcuffed in front of him / her?
Shurely shome mishtake Sharge !!!!!!
All i'm saying is it could happen.
What do you Garda guys get issued?
Is it Smith and Wesson model 100's same as most USA Cops?
Their knives are very good too. I've got a S+W 1st response tool, windscreen punch etc.
Was on a SJA duty once and you should have seen the look I got from one of our lot when the Duty Officer asked if I had my "Smith and Wesson" on me (he wanted to borrow it to use the screwdriver tip to fix a hinge on the mobile unit door)
Yeah it was S&W M100 in either blue or nickle finish up to a few years ago, but now it's Hiatts 2010... Far inferior to the S&W I believe...
I believe in fact that one US Police Dept., got sued for cuts to a prisoner's wrist because of the 2010's sharper edges... They've now reverted to S&W.
These are my cuffs.
My Wife is issued these, Peerless model 700.
Wish my wife had those issued the Speedcuffs tend to hurt
We have three lots in service at the moment.
Firstly is the hinged Chubb handcuffs, however they are slowly being replaced due to one of the working parts wearing out and the ratchet becomes useless.
Second is the chained Saflock handcuffs. I have these at the moment however in theory they are being replaced with hinged Saflock Handcuffs. These are great and an awesome bit of kit for takedowns etc etc. However us guys out on the road still don't have them and it looks like it's going to take a while to get them. At the moment recruits get them and anyone looking to replace their chubb's.

| As far as I know, RAFP do indeed use speed cuffs, but different batons |
I think they use the monadnock autolock baton

I'm not sure though
Was surprised to see Royal Navy personnel carrying Autolock 21" there recently when the HMS Ocean was in Dublin.
In South Australia we use Hiatt Hinged as our issue cuffs. Personally I think they are useless pieces of crap, but thats just my opinion. I think that handcuffs need to have a bit of give in them to make them easier to apply to criminals that are struggling with you and hinged ones just dont have that give.
In relation to the criminal being chained to a hook on the floor, doesnt this contradict the whole positional asphyxia issue. If we have any dramas with crims carrying on in the back of the car then we get a caged vehicle to convey the dirtbag. If no cage is available then we put then in the back passenger seat and push the front passenger seat all the way back, recline it and hey presto, dirtbag cant move.
Except when he goes into the car length ways sometimes you just can't beat the slightly more portly officer just lying on him!
God knows we have enough of them
