In the UK, most forces issue their officers with hiatts speedcuffs (picture below) user posted image

Although I know Sussex issue their officers with Chubb detainers but that's a whole new topic!

Well anyway, I was wondering, if your local force doesn't issue it's officers with Hiatts speedcuffs, what does it issue them with? Post pics if you have them.

I am quite supprised that there are still Police Forces in this coutry that don't issue Speedcuffs.

What are the training requirements for chain link cuffs?

Richie

Commissioner- 08-28-2005
Not sure on the training requirements but apparantly the reason for it is because it reduces injury or something.

Injury to who exactly? That's my question! The criminal? The lawbreaker? or on the other hand Speedcuffs of which the biggest risk of injury is if they are applied to one hand and the criminal uses it as a club and hits the officer with it.

Until I know the full facts, I don't think I'll go too deep but if asked whether I would prefer to reduce the risk of injury to the officer or offender then I don't really think I need to answer that.

Its a hell of alot hard to restrain in chain as it is in speedcuffs eg you cant do one on top of other of put on one hand and bend back if prisioner struggles. Cuffinbg is done the exact same as you would see on a US tv show agains a car or wall hand behind back. Also some of our cars have a hook on the floor that the cuffs lock into so can transport prisioners safer

I think Handcuffing technique is the thing I'm least looking forward to in Police Training (assuming I get in!).

Wrestling around with a suspect/drunk while trying to put cuffs on doesn't look easy by any stretch of the imagination!

Commissioner- 08-30-2005
Orinoco, I was exactly the same as you! If you decide to go for a HO force, then firstly don't choose Sussex (joke!) - but if you join a force which uses Speedcuffs then you will have no probs. Once you've got one cuff on you are given absolute control. You can pull grown men onto the floor with the techniques. The more they struggle the more it hurts - absolutely true. You will be taught everything you need to know and I'm sure after training you'll be a lot more confident about it!

Oh and also - do you know if the RAFP use Speedcuffs? I don't think they do but was just wondering.

Cheers for the info Commissioner, I feel a bit less apprehensive now.

As far as I know, RAFP do indeed use speed cuffs, but different batons.

I've just found out that BTP are hiring Specials, and you don't need a driving license to apply, if they're recruiting them in my area, I might go for them instead of the local force.

Commissioner- 08-30-2005
Most forces (if not all!) are recruiting constantly for Special's because they're free officers! I don't know what area of the country you're in but there are a number of HO forces which do not require officers to have a driving license. Out of interest, what is your local forcE?

Orinoco- 08-30-2005
Devon and Cornwall, and being in Cornwall (Perranporth to be exact), I don't have a lot of choice in force!

Commissioner- 08-30-2005
Ah yes, these County Mounty forces! Where you are leaves Avon & Somerset and Dorset (who are recruiting) out of the question.

With me, I could go for the MET, Surrey, Essex, Herfordshire, City of London, BTP LOL! But then that's London so slightly different.

Orinoco- 08-30-2005
I heard that Dorset require you to get 10.4 on the Bleep -*test*-('") though, harsh!

A+S would be possible if I lived a bit nearer, but as you say, my choices are very limited.
