Hardly surprising really when they only cover a square mile with more officers than you can shake a stick at, most of the area they police is commercial where everyone goes home at 1700 and don't work the weekends and most of the roads are covered by ANPR. Apart from that well done.

City of London Police has recorded a 42.9% detection rate for crimes committed within the Square Mile - the highest in England - the Force announced this week.

This is the fourth year running the rate has risen - last year's figure was 35.8%. Crime has also reduced for the third consecutive year, with 8434 offences being recorded, a reduction of 253 compared to last year. Figures were recorded for the year to end-March 2006.

The Force's figures for investigating economic crime reflect City of London Police's position as the lead for fraud investigation in the South-East. In the past year, the number of cash seizures has more than doubled, to £699,727. An increase in resources has also allowed the economic crime department to take on 280 new crime investigations, compared to 196 last year.

Assistant Commissioner Mike Bowron said: "I'm absolutely delighted with these figures, which reflect a sterling effort by all City of London police officers and staff.

"They are all proud to make it their business that the City remains a very safe place to live and work in."
