The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is to manage an investigation into the detention of a man in Staffordshire.
On 16 January 2007 a 33 year-old man was arrested by immigration officers for being unlawfully in the United Kingdom. He was taken to Burton Custody Suite where he was detained. Whilst in police custody the man attempted to self harm using a small blade. Following intervention by Staffordshire officers, the man was subsequently treated in hospital for superficial wounds.
This incident was referred to the IPCC by Staffordshire Police. IPCC Commissioner John Crawley has decided that a managed investigation should be undertaken. This will be led by IPCC deputy senior investigator Bob Lilley using officers from Staffordshire Police.
John Crawley, IPCC Commissioner said: "It is fortunate that this incident was not more serious. On arrest the man indicated to officers that he had a history of self harm. As a result of this the supervision put in place to monitor this prisoner was sufficient to ensure his actions were detected quickly. However our investigation will seek to establish how this man came to be in possession of a small blade whilst in custody and what checks were made on him by officers prior to his detention."
FFS,
not simply a case of 'well done, you stopped him', noooo, it's 'we're still gonna try and get you fired for negligence. You'll be cleared by a Court but we'll still take disciplinary action.'
