The IPCC is to investigate the treatment of a man who claims he was detained by Greater Manchester Police for more than nine hours without medical treatment despite having a broken ankle.

The 23-year-old man from South Reddish was arrested on Petersgate in Stockport town centre on 4 November 2006 for a public order offence and taken to Cheadle Heath police station. However the man claims his ankle was injured during the arrest and, despite complaining of pain, he was not seen by a doctor during the time he was detained.

Following his release from custody at approximately 10:30am on 4 November the man was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital by his mother and it was confirmed he did have a broken ankle. He subsequently underwent surgery to have a metal plate fitted to the bone.

The matter was referred by Greater Manchester Police to the IPCC. Naseem Malik, IPCC Commissioner for the North West, has decided to conduct an independent investigation into the man’s treatment.

Ms Malik said: “The alleged treatment of this man raises grave concerns. Our investigation will thoroughly examine all aspects of the man’s arrest and subsequent detention.”
