The Independent Police Complaints Commission yesterday announced an independent investigation into Avon and Somerset Constabulary's interactions with Kelly Parker before her stabbing on 14 April 2007 in the High Street, Worle, Weston-super-Mare.
Avon and Somerset referred the matter to the IPCC as 29-year-old Ms Parker had complained to the police about her former partner Roland Jones, from Weston-super-Mare.
IPCC Commissioner Tom Davies said: "Ms Parker has suffered horrific injuries and my best wishes for her recovery go to her and her family.
"The force referred this matter to the IPCC since they had taken a statement from Ms Parker following a complaint she had made about her former partner.
"Because of the serious assault Ms Parker suffered the IPCC will independently investigate the circumstances surrounding Avon and Somerset Constabulary's handling of this matter.
"The investigation will be sensitive to the criminal issues surrounding the alleged assault and IPCC deputy senior investigator Steve Martin has been appointed to lead the investigation team."
The separate Avon and Somerset investigation into the alleged attempted murder is continuing.
