Kent Police has won a coveted Diversity Award at the 2006 National Black Police Association international conference in Manchester for its achievements in promoting fairness and diversity across the county. It was the only UK force to receive the award.

The award recognises the importance of Kent’s diversity training covering the recruitment, retention, progression and development of black and minority ethnic people within the force.

The programme was introduced to improve trust and confidence in staff and in policing among communities, especially those who may feel vulnerable or isolated because of their age, disability, ethnicity, gender, race, religion or sexuality.

Jim Barker-McCardle, Deputy Chief Constable of Kent: “We are extremely pleased to receive an award of this significance in recognition of the progress we have made in our race and diversity objectives. This would not have been possible without the commitment of the Kent Minority Ethic Police Association, colleagues and members of Kent’s diverse communities, especially those working in our consultative groups. We know we have much more to do.”

Ann Barnes, Chair of the Kent Police Authority: “This award acknowledges at a national level the work the force continues to address around race and diversity. The battle of dismantling barriers with communities and staff is very real and the authority takes the issue of prejudice very seriously. It’s crucial the force continues to build trust to bridge any gaps.”
