From today, the Square Mile’s network of cameras will enable the City of London Corporation to take over the enforcement of a number of traffic offences from City of London Police.
The aim of the revised arrangements is to increase safety and reduce congestion whilst freeing up police resources for other important work.
The enforcement will be via remote CCTV covering the whole of the Square Mile. The cameras are already used for parking and bus lane offences. From Monday, camera enforcement will include the following:
Prohibited turns
Driving through no entry signs
Entering restricted zones
Driving the wrong way up a one way street
Stopping in a restricted area or box junction
The standard charge is £100 but this will be reduced to £50 if the charge is paid within 14 days of notification. The PCN (penalty charge notice) will be sent by post to the address of the registered vehicle keeper.
Prohibited turns
Driving through no entry signs
Entering restricted zones
Driving the wrong way up a one way street
These are all fine and well, but someones got to make sure that the signage and traffic regulation orders are all correct or the tickets aren't worth the paper they're written on.
I remember when Northampton first decriminalised its parking regulations and took over yellow line enforcement. There was 2 years of heavy surveying and study of every TRO in the borough before powers could be handed over.
Seems like a good idea seeming how busy London is particulary in the City!
