Lord Stevens outlines his vision of the Border Security Advisory Committee

Following the inaugural meeting of the recently established Border Security Advisory Committee, commissioned by the Conservative Party, Lord Stevens outlines his vision of the Border Security Advisory Committeeoutlined his view of how the working group will provide independent, expert and impartial advice on this key national security issue. He said:

“Few would deny that we face a huge challenge in relation to our borders, from crime, drugs, people smuggling and terrorism. This has been recognised across the political spectrum.”

“One element to solving this problem is the introduction of a dedicated border security police force to bring together all organisations currently engaged in border security under one umbrella. This committee will provide independent and expert advice on the technical and operational aspects required to achieve this aim in practice.”

“I have felt for many years that such a border police force has been necessary and I know that this is a view shared by many in the law enforcement community.”

“This committee has been set up to provide impartial expert advice on a matter of national interest and importance. Our recommendations will be made publicly available.”

The Border Security Advisory Committee has been established to consider the nature, scope and viability of a UK Border Police Force and its role within the UK law-enforcement community.

The Committee has a wide-ranging membership, in order to ensure the highest level of relevant expertise and practical experience on border security.
