A service to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of Bradford policewoman Pc Sharon Beshenivsky has taken place in the city.

Pc Beshenivsky, 38, was shot dead as she investigated an armed robbery in Bradford on 18 November 2005.

Her colleague, Pc Teresa Milburn, who survived the shooting, was comforted by fellow officers during the short service in Centenary Square.

Pc Beshenivsky's husband Paul laid a wreath at a dedicated memorial stone.

Throughout the 15-minute service Pc Milburn held Mr Beshenivsky's hand.

Dozens of officers and members of the public attended the service, which was led by the Dean of Bradford, the Very Rev David Ison.

The dean said: "We meet today to honour her memory and the way that in death as in life she has inspired us."

The service also remembered Sgt Michael Hawcroft, who was killed while on duty in Bradford in 1981.

West Yorkshire Police's divisional commander for Bradford South, Ch Supt Sarah Brown, said earlier: "Although it is a year since the incident in which Sharon was killed, she is still very much in all of our thoughts.

Memorial restored

"It is important that we mark the anniversary not only for Sharon's family and members of the 'police family', but also for all the people of the city who were as shocked and saddened, as we all were, by the news of her death."

A stone previously placed in the memorial garden in Sgt Hawcroft's name was restored for Saturday's service.

Pc Beshenivsky was killed and Pc Milburn seriously injured when they were called to the Universal Express travel agency in Bradford.

Four men are currently on trial for her murder. A fifth man has admitted murder and will be sentenced at a later date.
