Isn't this what Crimestoppers is for blink.gif

Police in South Liverpool are stepping up their fight against crime with a confidential hotline, aimed at encouraging people to come forward with information about criminal activity in their Neighbourhoods.

Anyone who calls the free phone number will be asked to leave their details. They will then be called back by a police officer, who they can speak to in the stric-*test*-('") of confidence about such things as drugs or gun crime, burglary, robbery or car crime in the South Liverpool area. Although the call is not anonymous, the callers identity is protected and the information they give remains confidential. In certain cases, callers may be eligible for rewards in return for information if it leads to offenders being arrested and charged.

Detective Chief Inspector Nikki Holland said: "For us to build up a realistic picture of the scale and the nature of crime in our South Liverpool Neighbourhoods, information from local people is vital. Often, it is the residents themselves whose quality of life is most affected by criminal activity on their streets. When offenders are using their homes to pedal drugs, store stolen property or meet with other criminals, it causes fear and distress for those who have to live around them.

Valuable information

"Of course, residents and their families and visitors may be the ones to fall victim to streetcrime or burglars. Local people, then, tend to pick up on criminal activity in their communities and are often the ones who hold valuable information, which we can then act on.

"Information from local communities helps us to direct our resources to best affect and take positive action against criminals.

"We understand the difficulties people may face when giving information to the police on their neighbours, their associates or even family members and I would reassure our residents that their calls will be handled with the utmost care and professionalism. Our aim is to catch those responsible for crime in South Liverpool and improve the quality of life for law-abiding citizens."

The freephone number for all Liverpool South residents is 0800 458 1211.
