Scotland's largest police force has issued more than 20,000 fines of £30 each since it became an offence to use a mobile phone while driving in 2003.

Strathclyde Police released the figures prior to new penalties which will see the fine increase to £60 and three penalty points imposed from Tuesday.

The force has embarked on a week-long enforcement campaign to catch motorists flouting the law.

Supt Pat Docherty said officers would be out in force to detect offenders.

"Research consistently shows that illegally using a mobile phone while driving is dangerous as it distracts the drivers attention from the road," he said.
