Motorist quizzed over two Limerick deathsSunday, 25 February 2007 11:56
Gardaí are continuing to question a motorist following the deaths of a garda and a fireman in an accident in Co Limerick this morning.
The accident happened 30km west of Limerick city on the N69 at Barrigone, between Askeaton and Foynes, shortly after 5am this morning.
Garda and Fire Service teams had been called to the scene of a single-car collision at Morgan South where a car had overturned.
AdvertisementDuring an operation to lift the vehicle on to a transporter, a garda and a fireman were hit by an oncoming car. Both died instantly.
It is understood the garda was in his 50s and based at Newcastle West and the fireman was based at Foynes.
One man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink driving and taken to Henry Street Garda Station.
Fr John Mockler, curate of Foynes, attended the scene of the accident and said prayers over the bodies. Prayers were also said at Limerick Masses this morning.
The Tánaiste, Michael McDowell, and the Minister for Defence, Willie O'Dea, have sympathised with the families on behalf of the Government.
Mr O'Dea, a TD for Limerick East, has called the deaths a terrible tragedy.
He said people who work in the emergency services could be called out and at any time of the day or night and that made the deaths even more tragic.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, anyone with any information is asked to contact Askeaton Garda Station on 061-601630.
The N69 is closed between Askeaton and Foynes and diversions are in place.
