QUOTE (Chief Constable Bernard Hogan-Howe on the new Merseyside Police structure)
On January 30, we’ll be giving you a new Neighbourhood Policing model which will empower call handlers to send patrols to more calls. We’ve got the same number of officers and CSOs, but we’ve redistributed their roles so there are more officers to respond to non-emergency calls.

As well as more officers on hand to attend incidents, we’ll have dedicated officers in ward areas. They will be a permanent presence and won’t be pulled away to deal with events and large scale policing operations like football matches or VIP visits.

Time and time again people tell me they want action not words. I’m determined that you’ll notice a difference and see that we’re prepared for a total war on criminals whilst providing total care for victims of crime.

This is what I call Total Policing. We need to continue to lock up the criminals and enforce the law. One example of this is the Matrix team which, in the last 12 months, has successfully put away 49 gang-based criminals for more than 350 years. They’ve also seized more than £1m of criminals’ cash and assets.

We need your continued support. Keep telling us when and where crimes are being committed by phoning Crimestoppers 0800 555111 and in return we’ll act on that information.

January 30 is the next step forward in neighbourhood policing for Merseyside Police. This is not another initiative or scheme, it’s part our determination to take action against crime and those who flout the law. We want you to see a difference….

Exactly, but with no powers they are about as useful as a chocolate fireguard.
