Motorists who break the law and put lives at risk can now be reported quickly and anonymously thanks to a new North Yorkshire Police-backed initiative.

Crimestoppers’ “Bad Drivers” campaign is launched last Friday and aims to root out illegal and dangerous drivers with help from the general public.

Those targeted include disqualified and drink drivers, as well as motorists who get behind the wheel without a driving licence, motor insurance and MOT for the vehicle.

Assistant Chief Constable Peter Bagshaw said: "This excellent scheme presents a great opportunity for the public to be directly and positively involved in the fight against crime. More importantly, the information they pass onto Crimestoppers could even save lives if it takes these people off our roads.

“Make no mistake, drink-drivers, disqualified drivers, uninsured drivers and the rest are criminals - they are every bit as anti-social, callous and uncaring as any burglar or robber.

“By their behaviour at the wheel they are saying they don't care about the safety of other road users and they don't care about the decent majority who pay for their tax and insurance and make sure their vehicles are road worthy.”

The force’s Community Safety Department, which is part of Mr Bagshaw’s portfolio of responsibility, is sponsoring the campaign. 9,000 promotional business cards have been printed and will be distributed to individuals throughout the force area, and 600 posters will also be displayed in pubs and clubs.

To report a “Bad Driver”, members of the public should note down the person’s name (if known), their address, vehicle registration number and the make, model and colour of the vehicle and then call Crimestoppers call 0800 555 111 - it’s as simple as that!
