Northamptonshire Police’s Scientific Support Unit has come in for praise from the Forensic Science Service Chief Executive, David Werrett.
He has written to the Chief Constable Peter Maddison expressing his "admiration at the recent success achieved by Northamptonshire Police in relation to DNA work which has contributed to a significant increase in detections within the force"
In his letter, Mr Werrett also says "the number of DNA samples recovered from crime scenes has also gone up dramatically".
From April to June 2004, 480 DNA samples were -*test*-('")ed and in the same period 2005 the number rose to 830 samples. During the same periods the number of samples of suitable quality to load on to the National DNA Database rose from 53.8 per cent to 65.3 per cent. Figures for 2006 are not yet available.
Mr Werrett explained "the good work has resulted in a near 50 per cent increase in reports identifying potential offenders for further investigation".
He felt that this success was down to the Northamptonshire Force’s "ability to focus attendance on the most productive crime scenes, the most productive types of sample and also the quick response of Northamptonshire officers once a report was received".
