blink.gif Because of health and safety concerns, extra restrictions have been put in place to protect the few police volunteers that do exist in the country. Now they are no longer permitted to ride in police cars, are not permitted to have any contact with offenders or prisoners, are not permitted to assist with any police type duty such as traffic control, and are not permitted to accompany officers on any regular police work or to remain unaccompanied in a police station ipf/omg.gif .
They can however, make the tea, sweep the floors, wash the cop cars, and if they are really careful assist with putting files in the storeroom, (provided the same storeroom isn't used for exibits or weapons)

If I was a volunteer in New Zealand then I would be handing in my notice as soon as I read this article! blink.gif

ipf/cop.gif I'm just about to check what the current numbers for voluntary officers are ... will be interesting!

Wow, and I thought Health and Safety regs. in the UK were bad!!

Aquilina- 09-10-2005
That's very bad I think. Who is going to be a volunteer slave?

Jon- 09-10-2005
mmm, that's interesting. I wonder if it has something to do with them having Motorway Support Officers and wanting more recruits, hoping the volunteers will go for this job instead?
You'll have to keep us posted. ipf/tu.gif

Hi Jon when you say motorway support officers do you mean like the ones we have here on the M6 ( kind of motorway PCSO's )

Commissioner- 09-11-2005
Do you know if their MSO's are similar to our Highways Agency which are gradually taking more responsibility and power on our motorways?

Are the motorway support officers sworn officers or are they just civilians?

Jon- 09-11-2005
Not sure, they keep refering to them on the programme Motorway Patrol.
I think they are like PCSO's. They can stop vehicles, but call for police if they need to arrest or sort someone out. (no, I don't mean beat anyone up or actually SORT them out..........) laugh.gif

Sound like they are part of a visual presence thing, reassurance that sort of thing.

Lordcov- 09-11-2005
The lads around here ( M6 ) seem to do a good job , i dont know what the RPU think of them but they always seem to be busy ipf/tu.gif
