Police have been attacked by a crowd in Newry, County Down, the PSNI has said.

It happened at 0400 BST on Sunday when officers responded to reports of criminal damage to a car in the Old Warrenpoint Road area.

A man and a woman became abusive and violent towards police and a crowd of about 20 people gathered.

Police said a number of men set upon one officer and as three other officers went to help they were repeatedly punched. Police withdrew from the area.

The man and woman were arrested and are currently in police custody.
