An investigation is under way after a pedestrian was knocked down and killed by a police van answering a call.

Married father-of-four Karl Rowbottom, 32, from the Greatfield Estate in Hull, was hit just after midnight on Beverley Road in the city.

Police said Mr Rowbottom, a chef, was on his way home from a night out with colleagues when the accident happened.

He died later in Hull Royal Infirmary. The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed.

Humberside Police said the police van, with two officers, was answering a "call to service" when the accident happened.

The force has appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Mr Rowbottom had three daughters, aged four, five and 11, and a one-year-old son.
