Police search dog Jake and his handler PC Bob Crawford received the Blue Cross medal for heroism, bravery and dedication displayed by animals at a special award ceremony held by the Blue Cross animal hospital in Victoria this week.
The country's oldest charitable animal hospital in London, had reinstated the medal for one year only to mark the centenary of The Blue Cross animal hospital where owners or handlers were requested to nominate animals that had come to the aid of another animals or human life, and shown bravery, companionship, or loyalty.
The award, which was presented by actress Felicity Kendal, was in recognition for their work during the London bombings in July 2005. Jake, a cocker spaniel, and PC Bob Crawford, based at Nine Elms Police Station Wandsworth, were responsible for searching the bus at Tavistock Square and also the underground tunnel at Russell Square for secondary devices in order that the injured could be evacuated.
Pc Bob Crawford said:
"We are delighted that Jake has won the medal. Jake is a hardworking dog who performed brilliantly on the day of the bombings. Animals help all our lives, and it's great that the Blue Cross is honouring their contribution. Jake will wear his Medal with pride."
