Police dogs working for Central Scotland Police are becoming blood donors in order to help save the lives of others.

Central Scotland Police currently operates with 16 dogs – German Shepherds, Cocker and Springer Spaniels and a Rottweiler - all of which will be registered with the scheme.

There is a current national shortage for dog blood donors and police officers in charge of the dog unit decided the time was right to act. The force uses a Stirling-based veterinary practice, Broadleys, and all sixteen dogs will be registered.

Sergeant Cameron Shanks said: “We regularly attend the vet with our dogs, generally for minor problems. However on several occasions we have had dogs with more serious illnesses and as a result require more blood. I think we just take it for granted that blood will be available when required, without really giving it any thought.

“The problem of a shortage of dog blood supplies was recently brought to our attention and we are more than happy to become involved in the scheme, as it may well save numerous animals over the years.

“If one of our dogs was injured in the line of duty we’d expect there to be blood supplies to assist. It seems only right that our dogs give something back that will help others.”

Veterinary specialist Yvonne McGrotty, who works with Broadleys and who works alongside Central Scotland Police, said: “Canine and feline blood donors are always needed and yet are difficult to obtain. We often have to rely on veterinary staff to allow their own dog or cat to donate blood to save the lives of other animals. We urgently need more donors. A blood transfusion may be needed following a road accident, prior to surgery or due to a medical condition which attacks and destroys red blood cells.

“A transfusion can be life saving. We hope to highlight the need for more donors to come forward and we are extremely grateful for the Central Scotland Police Dog Unit for agreeing to allow their dogs to become blood donors.”
