Police are issuing a warning to the public after two drums of cyanide were stolen from a Colchester engineering firm by burglars.
The containers of strong poison were taken during a raid at the company's premises which was reported by staff on the morning off Monday, October 16.
The burglars took the two 50kg drums of the highly toxic substance as well as helping themselves to other metal materials including copper.
An Essex Police spokesman said: "Why anybody would want to steal this I really don't know. Our concern is that the thieves will decide they do not want it and discard it. We do not want a member of the public getting hold of it; if someone started messing around with this their life could be at risk."
The substance is very toxic if inhaled, swallowed or comes into contact with the skin. The substance, officially called durferrit cs 730, is used by engineering firms in their line of work.
The containers are red with the word poison written on them. Advice to anyone finding them is not to touch them but to ring the police immediately and advise of their location.
Anyone with information about the theft or the current whereabouts of the drums is asked to contact Sgt Dave Wheddon at Colchester police station on 01206 762212.
