The actions of police officers at a fatal house fire have been praised by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

Gwent Police were called to a house in Cwmbran, Torfaen early on Wednesday after reports of a disturbance.

The occupant, Mark Seabourne, died after a fire began inside the house.

His death was referred to the IPCC who said the investigation could be carried out by Gwent Police adding evidence pointed to an "exemplary response".

Police were sent to the house in The Crescent early on 13 December following reports by neighbours of a disturbance.

Mr Seabourne was said to have armed himself and was damaging property inside.

A fire was later seen in an upstairs bedroom and South Wales Fire Service went to the scene.

Once the fire was brought under control, police and fire officers went inside the house and discovered the body of Mr Seabourne in an upstairs bedroom.

IPCC commissioner Tom Davies said: "I would like to offer my condolences to Mr Seabourne's family and friends following his tragic death.

"IPCC investigators were deployed to the incident and assessed the circumstances and the police action, and the evidence to date points to an exemplary police response.

"The officers equipped themselves well. I hope that Gwent Police consider recognising their bravery, as they entered the burning building to attempt to rescue Mr Seabourne.

"I have decided that the matter can be dealt with by Gwent Police, who will carry out a local investigation and prepare a file for the coroner."
