A messaging facility has been introduced across the west of Edinburgh so that people can text crime reports directly to the police.

Members of the public can send in details of incidents such as vandalism, thefts and anti-social behaviour.

The initiative has been backed by Lothian and Borders Police and Edinburgh Council.

It is hoped the ease and anonymity of the service will encourage members of the community to identify culprits.

Chief Inspector John Hawkins, based at Wester Hailes Police Station said: "Low level and high volume crimes like vandalism are difficult to prevent and expensive to repair, costing the council and the people of Edinburgh thousands of pounds each year.

"This new service adds to the range of ways people can already contact their local police officers."

Parkhead councillor and Edinburgh council transport leader Ricky Henderson said: "Too often, people are reluctant to report low level crimes in their community to the police, perhaps due to a fear of recrimination.

"With this text messaging service, individuals reporting crimes can be guaranteed anonymity.

"It should also greatly assist the police in their commitment to tackling all levels of crime within the community.

"I am delighted that such a proactive step has been taken in Wester Hailes and I look forward to seeing the results of the pilot scheme."

Cards and posters highlighting the initiative are being distributed locally.
