A man has been shot dead by armed police.

Officers were called to an incident at an address on Bondfield Way in Meire, Stoke-on-Trent, at around 1am, Staffordshire police said.

A police spokeswoman said armed police were sent to the address and a firearm was later discharged, killing a man at the scene.

The incident has already been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, she added.

The spokeswoman said no other members of the public were involved and no one else was injured.

The area where the man died has been cordoned off while detectives and other officers carry out inquiries and is likely to remain closed off for some time.

No disciplinary action will be taken after police shot dead a Staffordshire man, a watchdog has ruled.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has spent seven months examining the death of Philip Marsden, 47, in Meir, in December.

An armed unit was sent after reports Mr Marsden had been seen carrying weapons. He died from a single gunshot.

The IPCC said police had "genuinely believed" they were in danger. Any criminal charges were ruled out in May.

Mr Marsden was shot in Bondfield Way in the early hours of 19 December.

The IPCC did recommend that area control room staff should receive extra training to better prepare them for the realities of being involved in a firearms incident.

The watchdog also suggested staffing levels in the control room be reviewed to ensure there were always enough staff to deal with "dynamic critical incidents".

The IPCC said it heard evidence from several independent witnesses, including some who heard the police negotiating with Mr Marsden and witnessed the shot being fired.

IPCC commissioner John Crawley said: "Staffordshire officers attending the incident genuinely believed they were facing a dangerous situation and that Mr Marsden presented a substantial risk to the safety of those - officers and members of the public - in the immediate vicinity.

"The public can be assured that police firearms officers made every appropriate effort to negotiate with Philip Marsden.

"Despite clear warnings from the officers Mr Marsden deliberately aimed his imitation weapon at the police officers.

"We will never have a full understanding of why Philip Marsden acted in the way he did, or whether he appreciated the gravity of the situation he came to face that morning."
