An investigation is under way after a pedestrian was hit by a police car in York city centre.

The accident happened on Ouse Bridge as the patrol car was on its way to an incident on Saturday.

The man, who has not been named, was taken to hospital suffering with head injuries and the road was closed for three hours.

North Yorkshire Police has referred the accident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
