A police officer is facing a prison sentence after admitting having sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Pc Christopher Billinge, 25, from Chorley in Lancashire, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual activity with a girl he knew to be under 16.

Newcastle Crown Court heard he committed the offence last September while off duty in Sunderland.

The Skelmersdale-based Pc was suspended from the force following his arrest and now faces the sack.

Billinge, who had been an officer for two years, changed his plea to guilty on the eve of Monday's trial.

He was released on bail and will be sentenced on Tuesday.

Judge Esmond Faulks said he accepted that Billinge was of good character but warned him he faced jail.

He added: "I am going to adjourn sentence until tomorrow to give you time to sort out your affairs.

"I have already given an indication of what the sentence will be, one of custody and you will have to bear that in mind and prepare yourself."

Billinge had met the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, in an internet chatroom, and sent her explicit text messages and e-mails.

She had told him she was a year older and would soon be turning 16, but the prosecution told the court that there was compelling evidence from these messages that he fully understood that she was 15.

He visited her while her parents were away on holiday and she was in the care of her grandfather.

When the girl's mother became suspicious of Billinge's relationship with her daughter he destroyed his computer to hide evidence of the explicit internet chats with the teenager.

Ray Herman, defending, said the Cardiff University graduate, who was brought up in Liverpool, was of exceptionally good character.

He added: "He has lost his good name, both in the community and amongst his family and friends.

"It is a disgrace he is finding hard to bear."

Judge Esmond Faulks sentenced him to one year in prison.

Another charge of sexual grooming was ordered to lie on file.

Disgusting. Like I said in another post, police should set the ultimate example, and doing this is a disgrace.

I am sure the hard time he will get in prison will teach him!!!!!! Being a cop and a sex offender can't be good !!!!!

One year in prison? Is that a joke?

Firstly nothing makes me angrier then reading this type of thing. I mean we are suppossed to be upholding the law not breaking it. Once of the most disgusting problems on this planet is the abuse of children and this piece of @#$$% in a uniform abused the privilege and power. I hope his time in jail is an extremely hard one and he gets to feel the pain he inflicted on the child.

As for the sentence, that is just absolutely disgusting in my books. I mean seriously, one year, just an absolute disgrace
