A policeman who claims he was victimised after speaking up for a colleague has won his fight to have the case heard by an employment tribunal.

Pc James Shaw, of Tayside Police, gave evidence at an earlier tribunal where he supported Pc Douglas Fisher's concerns over solo officer patrols.

Last month Pc Fisher became the first police officer to successfully sue his chief constable at a tribunal.

Pc Shaw's move has been backed by the Scottish Police Federation.

Pc Shaw claimed to have suffered detrimental effects through his support for Mr Fisher, who was awarded £15,000 after alleging he was blocked for promotion after raising his concerns.

Tayside Police tried to stop Pc Shaw's case from going ahead by arguing that the tribunal did not have jurisdiction to hear the complaint.

However, following a preliminary hearing in Dundee last month, tribunal chairman Nicol Hosie ruled that the case could be heard and should proceed to a full hearing.

The tribunal in Pc Fisher's case ruled that he was unlawfully subjected to detriment by the police and his application for promotion from constable to sergeant was not supported by his line manager.

It further found that Pc Fisher brought his concerns to his employer's attention by "reasonable means".
