In a press release from West Yorkshire Police, they say, "A reassuring police presence will be on hand to help people at a motorway service area in Calderdale as part of a groundbreaking joint initiative".

Police Community Support Officer Elaine McGuinness, will now be stationed at the Hartshead Moor service area, on the M62, after the service area’s owners, Welcome Break, joined forces with Calderdale Division, and Calderdale Safer Communities Partnership to fund the full-time post.

Chief Inspector Steve Cotter, of Calderdale Community Safety Department, said: “Motorway service areas are unique environments that are not usually policed in the same ways as other populated areas. There is a whole community of people who pass through Hartshead Moor service area, along with all the people who work there, who will now benefit from this officer being on hand to help them with any problems and offer any advice.

“We have been working very closely with Welcome Break during continuing refurbishment work to help them design out crime and create a safer environment for people. The appointment of this officer will help to improve things even further for people using the site.”

As well as providing a reassuring presence while working a variety of shifts at the site, PCSO McGuinness will also be available to give advice or discuss any issues with members of the public at regular surgeries, details of which will be advertised on site.

Councillor Grenville Horsfall, Chair of Calderdale Safer Communities Partnership, said: "I am really pleased to see the private sector working with the Council and Police to invest in Community Safety in Calderdale. Calderdale Council, and now Welcome Break, have led the way in funding PCSOs and Street Wardens."

Will this officer carry out traffic duties like breathing alcohol and inspections of cars? Is this part of these 'neighbourhood police' policies you have been getting lately?

They aren't an officer but a civilian paid by the police to look like there are more of us.
