Proposals to introduce PCSOs into N Ireland out for consultation
Security Minister, Paul Goggins MP, is bringing forward legislation that could see the introduction of Police Community Support Officer’s (PCSOs) throughout Northern Ireland.
The proposed introduction of PCSOs is a part of a raft of issues contained in the draft Policing (Miscellaneous Provisions) (NI) Order 2007 and will amend existing Northern Ireland policing legislation and introduce new subject areas in line with GB.
Paul Goggins said “The Government is committed along with the PSNI to make communities feel safe and secure by reducing crime and antisocial behaviour in their area.
“I firmly believe that this can be achieved through the work of visible and accessible neighbourhood policing teams that are responsive to local priorities and can be fully engaged with their local communities.
“The introduction of PCSOs will be a valuable tool in assisting the PSNI to increase public confidence in policing on the ground and will provide a further opportunity to demonstrate the diversity of the wider policing family.”
The consultation will run until Monday 22 January. Views and comments from any organisation or individual with an interest in this issue are welcome on all aspects of the draft Order.
