Coming from London, I've never been aware of retained firefighters - I hadn't even heard of them up until a few years ago. Am I right in thinking there aren't as many in big cities as there are in rural areas?

There are no retained stations in London's area. They are only used in smaller towns and villages.

Its not so much as the smaller towns and villages but rather where it is more cost effective to have either a half whole time and half retained station or a fully retained station. It is not really dependent on the size of the town as I know of a couple of places where there is a large area to cover but they have one station with two fully retained appliances! wink.gif

My town, large suburb of Dublin over 100,000 residents still have a retained station, talk of it going full-time but I'll believe it when I see it
