A police officer is in intensive care in hospital after her marked car crashed through a wall into a river.

The vehicle entered the River Ouse, Bedford, in the early hours of Sunday, police said.

Some wedding guests at a nearby hotel waded into the water to help police and firefighters rescue the woman.

The officer was on patrol in the car with a male colleague, who was unhurt, when it crashed through concrete pillars along The Embankment, Bedford.

The male officer managed to escape to safety immediately, but the woman constable was trapped in the car in about 3ft of water.

She was taken to Bedford South Wing hospital for treatment where her condition on Sunday night was described as critical but stable.

Bedfordshire Police said the vehicle was not responding to an emergency call or in pursuit of another car when the accident happened.
