Police chiefs in South Africa have fitted the country's 35,000 police cars with satellite tracking systems to stop officers skiving.

National police commissioner Jackie Selebi announced the new move this week saying he was fed up with complaints about police cars parked beside the road or under trees.

Passers-by have complained after seeing officers sleeping or reading newspapers when they were supposed to be on patrol.

He said: "I want to know where all of them are at any given time. Nobody is going to park under trees to sleep or do things that have got nothing to do with their job descriptions any more."

........not even a mention of officer safety then, knowing where they are if they are in trouble.
oh, there they are, under a tree sleeping ipf/bigsmily.gif

Aren't the black boxes placed in police vehicles in an attempt to slow officers down on shouts, our black boxes record driver data which is constantly re-recorded so it shows the last 30 minutes of driver behaviour

I know they were looking at something to go in our airwaves but haven't heard anything about them being fitted in cars.

Better in hand helds, so if you aren't with your car C/Room still know where you are.

Lordcov- 10-17-2005
I think that will be a good thing , especially if in the s.h.1.t .

One hit of the emergency button no need to talk ...superb

Apparently we have it in our airwaves now but it is still to be activated.

We have it in our Airwaves. They are NOT in the handhelds, mobiles only. You have a little GPS module on the car so when you press the red "HELP ME" button they know exactly where you are.

That has been active since day of fitting.

We have gps trackers on some unmarked cars but alot of officers ripped them off the roof and stuck it in the boot as the cars stood out like a babbons bottom
