A couple of hours ago I got back from a 12 hour shift on response. We were particularly low on numbers (that's bank holiday for you

) and I was out single crewed in one of our IRV Astra's.
The biggest (and only) incident of the day for me was attending to a 999 call with reports of a doctors surgery (closed) being broken in to by a group of youths - male aged 16-20. It was reported by the cleaner who was locked inside the premises that attempts were being made to force entry with her inside. Doors were getting kicked, windows hit, youths on the roof etc.
I was a few minutes away but the closest available unit - the only available unit except for a van which was about 15 minutes away.
So... I responded to it, blues & twos (got my permit for that about 8 months ago now) : 1) Alone women inside 2) Doctors surgery - drugs, needles etc. on site:
I arrive to find the door is open. No sign of the cleaner who reported the incident. Can't wait for back-up, anyway just as I'm about to rack my ASP to go inside the three youths come round the path way that goes round the back. They see me and run back. I set off on foot calling for back-up to control - the youths pay no attention to my calls for them to "stop"... obviously.. They get round the back and because this is a house converted into a doctor's place they are in what would be the back garden. No where to go. All 3 are not willing to comply, they can't get out because there is a 6 foot wall. The only way out is through me where the path is. I draw CS (should try to use this before resorting to use of baton) and tell them all to get against the wall with hands on their heads.
One of them shouted "now" and all three run towards me. I spray CS continuously and two immediately stop, start covering their eyes and end up on the floor crying

but the other is unaffected and makes off. By this time, all the commotion (shouting etc.) and the Astra with blues flashing outside with the door open has attracted the attention of the locals. A few blokes have come out of the nearby pub and see the one remaining youth coming towards them. Two of the men grab him and hold an arm each. He is struggling, and CS hasn't affected him so I prioritise and get the cuffs on to him. The other two on the floor aren't going anywhere. One of the guys says he is a retired officer (think he was at least 65

) and goes and talks to the two sprayed people telling them what is going on while I hold the violent man in cuffs against the car... he claims the blue light is "blinding him"... prat

. A couple of minutes later and back up arrives, and he is placed in the van cage. One of my colleagues takes care of the traumatised cleaner who thanks me. She isn't hurt at all... they didn't manage to get in.
Once everything is under control I realise that I've ripped the belt loop off my cuff pouch (don't ask how!) and I've got a cut to the head... and I'm ordered off to the local A & E after booking in my guests to custody. Nothing serious ...
3 x criminal damage
1 x posession of an offensive weapon (one of the spraying "victims" was later found to have a flick knife.)
1 x Assaulting a police officer
1 x Assault with intent to resist arrest
1 x Possession of a controlled substance (cannabis)
2 x Fear Of Provocation Of Violence
1 x Intentional Harassment, Alarm or Distress (public order act)
3 x Violent Disorder - (3 or more people ... there was 3 of them, so this qualifies as an offence)
Not a bad lock up in my opinion, for a special anyway, we don't often see too much action but it's good to see everything I learnt in my training came back to me four and a half years later.
Could have turned out worse though, after all one had a knife, there was three of them, one of me ... I've got CS and an ASP. Oh well no point dwelling on what
could of happened.
My personal arrest of the year so far
