Shot Fired by PSNI Up to four masked men were involved in the attempted eviction in the Ballycraigy estate in Antrim town today.
Nobody was hurt, but one man was later arrested.
The gang went to the house, allegedly in a bid to drive out the resident as part of a deepening row linked to the Loyalist Volunteer Force, sources in the area said.
He is understood to have received death threats a week ago.
One frightened neighbour hit out at those involved.
"These thugs have this estate terrorised," he said.
"If these people are saying they have gone away it doesn`t look like it."
A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman confirmed officers opened fire.
"Police responded to a call in Antrim shortly before 2.30am in connection with a number of masked men trying to gain entry to a house," she said.
"A shot was discharged into the air by police during the incident.
"One man has been arrested and investigations are under way."
It is understood the Police Ombudsman`s Office has been informed about the gunfire.
