An officer who was shot in the leg during the Lozells disturbances in October 2005 is to receive a Chief Constable’s Commendation.

PC Peter Harrison will receive his commendation from West Midlands Police Authority on Tuesday 9 January at the ceremony at Tally Ho!, Pershore Road, Edgbaston, at 8pm.

PC Harrison was on duty as part of the police response following the disorder in the Lozells area on the evening of Saturday 23 October.

While patrolling Birchfield Road at approximately 11.30pm, officers saw a group heading towards Lozells.

As they tried to disperse the crowd gunshots were heard. Despite this, the officers continued towards the group and dispersed them.

At the time of the gunshots, PC Harrison was aware that he had received an injury but continued to help disperse the crowd.

Only after the group had gone did he check to see the extent to his injury and found he had been shot in the right leg.

Chief Superintendent Steve Jordan, commander at Thornhill Road police station, said: “At the time of being shot PC Harrison could have alerted colleagues who would have diverted their attentions to him away from the crowd. He chose not to do so and his actions were exemplary.

“Despite his injuries PC Harrison continued on his shift with professionalism and dedication.”

A number of people are currently in the court process charged with a variety of offences allegedly committed during the disorder in October 2005.
