There has been a gun attack at a police station in County Armagh.

It is understood a number of shots were fired at the station in Keady on Thursday.

The attack happened at about 2145 GMT. Police have closed the Castleblayney Road while they investigate the attack and have appealed for information.

Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain condemned the incident and said the only people harmed by it were those who lived in the area.

"If this was dissident republicans, the only victims of this are not the people they seek to inflict terror and criminality on - and their purpose is to destablise the restoration of devolved government - the only victims are the people in whose communites they live.

"Over the past seven months dissident republicans have caused in excess of £25m worth of damage," Mr Hain said.

Ulster Unionist assembly member Danny Kennedy blamed dissident republicans for the attack.

"I've warned over many years that the (security) changes that were made were premature," he said.

"Unfortunately it would appear to confirm my view that the level of threat remains high. There is clear activity from republican dissidents."

SDLP Councillor Thomas O'Hanlon also condemned it.

"There is no support in the community for any type of attacks on our emergency services or property.

"I urge anyone who can help with the investigation to contact local police," Mr O'Hanlon said.

Keady police station has limited opening hours and is not open overnight.

There were no reports of any injuries in the attack.

It's turning into a bit of an embarassmant this one, station was only manned by 2 Officers who wouldn't come out of the station but phoned local residents to see if they had heard anything. ipf/blush.gif
Wouldn't like to have been walking down the street and been attacked by these people, wonder when backup would have arrived.
