A road safety charity has criticised a sentence given to an off-duty police officer caught driving at 105mph.

West Yorkshire Police officer Matthew Troake, 27, drove his Audi sports car at 105mph on the A65 Settle by-pass in North Yorkshire in April.

He was fined £250 and given six penalty points at Skipton Magistrates' Court after admitting speeding.

A spokeswoman for road safety charity Brake said Troake should have been disqualified from driving.

Dianne Ferreira said: "Everybody in these circumstances should of course be banned. There needs to be a severe punishment for driving at killer speeds.

"Driving at over 100mph is clearly too fast.

"All we say about police officers especially is that they should be setting the example. They are the ones upholding the law and they should be the ones setting the example to everybody else that speeding will not be tolerated."

West Yorkshire Police said they would look into whether any disciplinary action was necessary against Troake.
