Two people were arrested after police used a stinger device to bring a stolen double-decker bus to a halt.

Police were called when the bus, which had been taken from outside a depot, was spotted being "driven erratically" in Seghill, near Blyth, Northumberland.

When police requests to stop failed, metal stinger devices were laid on road, puncturing the bus's tyres.

The two people arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking were later released on police bail.

After initial reports, officers began following the bus in Seaton Delaval and chased it through Seaton Sluice, before it to came to a stop at the roundabout on the A192 in Earsden.

A lamppost was knocked down during its journey.

The stinger device consists of an extendable metal strip of spikes which are thrown across roads by officers who manage to get ahead of a suspect vehicle.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "After being followed for a short distance on to Hartley Lane the bus failed to stop when requested to do so by police officers.

"Tactics were deployed which included deploying stinger tyre deflation devices which brought the vehicle to a stop."

Shouldn't this be in the 'funnies' section? ipf/bigsmily.gif Why would you steal a double decker bus, seriously? blink.gif
